How to Choose the Right Plumbing Tape and When to Use It
Thread seal tape is inexpensive, small, and commonly found in plumbing toolboxes.
It's also frequently misunderstood.
The most important rule is simple:
Not every plumbing connection needs thread seal tape.
1. What Does Thread Seal Tape Do?
PTFE thread seal tape is commonly used on certain compatible threaded pipe connections.
It can help seal the threaded joint and facilitate assembly when appropriate for that connection.
2. Check the Connection First
Before reaching for tape, identify how the joint is designed to seal.
Some plumbing connections seal at the threads.
Others rely on:
- Washers
- Gaskets
- Compression components
- Flared surfaces
- Other sealing methods
Adding tape where it doesn't belong can interfere with proper assembly.
3. Follow Product Instructions
The fitting, fixture, or appliance manufacturer may specify whether thread seal tape or another approved sealant should be used.
Follow those instructions rather than applying tape automatically.
4. Application Direction Matters
When tape is specified, it should be applied in the appropriate direction so it doesn't simply unravel as the fitting is assembled.
Follow the tape and fitting manufacturer's recommendations.
5. More Isn't Automatically Better
Excessive tape isn't a substitute for correct fitting selection or proper assembly.
If a connection doesn't seal, investigate the cause rather than continuously adding more material.
6. Never Use Tape to Make Incompatible Parts Fit
Thread tape doesn't change thread size.
It doesn't convert one connection standard into another.
And it doesn't repair damaged fittings.
Compatibility comes first.
Final Thoughts
Thread seal tape is a useful plumbing supply when used on the right connection.
But good plumbing isn't about putting tape on every thread you see.
Identify the connection.
Read the specifications.
Use the correct sealing method.
That's a much better approach than guessing.
